Friday, February 29th, 2008

By Kristy Venditti Take control of your teen age depression. For the teen age person and their parents. This truly is a world wide illness, not just in the united states but all over the world. This illness has been around as long as life itself. We can find out the signs by observing our thoughts on many aspects of your life. Do you not care about your friends any more? Do you stay in bed all day? Do you get angry for no reason? Is your grades declining in school? Do you have the I do not care attitude about anything like how you talk or how you look. Talking helps get your feelings know out loud. When you do this you can start to address your thoughts. Then you can start to climb that mountain with out running out of breath. When you finally reach the top you will be able to see all the beautiful things in this wold. You will also see the bad, but that is okay because you will see them in a whole new way and be able to handle these situations in a different way. There is hope for you and sunshine at the end of this long dark tunnel. Remember get help, this is okay to do! Talk your problems and thoughts out and if you are recommended to take medicine than take that medicine. Its okay, I call it the wonders of happy feelings for the rest of your life. The Quantum Doctor Is Here

Friday, February 29th, 2008

By Thomas Herold These days the word quantum seems to be everywhere, at least that seems to be the case in my universe. Especially as I have just finished reading the Quantum Doctor by Amit Goswami. To understand what a Quantum doctor might be let me explain first some traditional healing approaches. The major approach to healing in our western world is called allopathic medicine. It is based on the premise that disease is due to external bacteria and viruses or a mechanical malfunction of an internal organ of the physical body. A treatment is done by addressing the symptoms of the disease until they disappear. All of the treatments are applied external in form of pills, drugs, radiation and other techniques. Than we have eastern medicine which includes acupuncture, ayurveda, chinese herbs and many other more spiritual healing methods. These healing techniques have a different approach as they address the mind, the soul and other energy regions of the body. Another very interesting approach is homeopathy. The basic idea behind this technique is that like cures like and less is more. In a high potency of homeopathic remedy you wont find a single atom of the original formula anymore, the potency is greatly diluted. From a strict point of western science there is nothing in the substance anymore. However, homeopathy works in many cases, so there must be something that acts as a healing agent which is non physical. The strangest of all healing techniques is the placebo effect. A patient is given a new medication that the doctor subscribes as a cure for the patients disease. In many cases the patient is cured by just believing in the healing power of the new medication. However, from the experience we also know that there is no formula whatsoever that applies to every disease the same way. In some cases an operation helps, sometimes not. Sometimes acupuncture helps, sometimes not. Also if you talk to a doctor each one seems to have their own concept about healing. Some people go as far to think that all diseases are created ultimately from the mind and from the consciousness behind it. Thus consciousness of course is also responsible for the healing. Just tell this to someone who is in pain and cannot think about anything else besides the pain. Is there a Difference between Disease and Illness?Disease could be described as a malfunction of the organism that can be diagnosed by machines & tests. Illness is more subjective, more the inner feeling of the malfunctioning. That means disease belongs to the physical body as it is external. Illness is internal and therefore tells us something about the malfunction of the correlated subtle body. What happens on a Quantum Level When We Get Sick?Amit Goswami says consciousness is not mind; it is the ground of all being, the ground of both matter and mind. Matter and mind are both possibilities of consciousness. When consciousness converts these possibilities in a collapse event of actual experience, some of the possibilities are collapsed as physical and some as mental. The events collapse of the waves of possibility are the result of conscious choice, downward causation. For this no mathematics exists, no algorithms. The choice of downward causation is free, unpredictable. This leads us more to the understanding that we need to look at different levels of our being to find the origin of the disturbance that later manifests into a disease or illness. So where does the Quantum doctor come in?A quantum doctor would investigate the patient to understand on which level the disturbance manifests. Amit Goswami devides consciousness into five levels: - Physical - Vital - Mental - Supra-mental Intellect - Bliss (Limitless) We need to look at all these levels to get a better picture. If for example someone had a car accident and broke a leg, that person needs to be treated on a physical level first. You simply need to take care of the bone and bring it back to the original position where it can heal and grow back together. However, this may not be the end of the story. Investigating this person may reveal some hidden surprises. It could be that this person is not satisfied with a relationship, and anger & frustration has lead to aggressive driving. This would correspond to the vital level. It maybe the case that this person has negative thoughts about themselves. For example life is boring, I am boring, I am worthless. Could that lead to an accident? You bet, and here we are talking about the mental level. We also experience that a disease may originate from one level and than spread to other levels. It works in both directions, from the physical up-wards over the vital to the mental level and down-wards from the limitless bliss level over the mental and vital to the physical level. One more important thing that Amit Goswami points out. The concept of unconscious is important for the subject of health and healing in connection with psychosomatic disease. We suppress the memories of certain traumatic experiences so deep that consciousness seldom collapse them, delegating them to what is called unconscious processing. The memories of these experiences are processed by producing somatic effects of disease, but we are not aware of them, because we never collapse these memories in our conscious thoughts. Quantum healing even works with prayer as it is nonlocal and takes place outside space & time. But to explain this you better get a hold of Amit Goswamis book ‘Quantum Doctor’. by Thomas Herold For more articles please visit:Quantum Biocommunication Technology Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Thomas_Herold http://EzineArticles.com/?The-Quantum-Doctor-Is-Here&id=89121 ativan affects nervous system get perscription for ambien online ambien addictive side effects consultation generic ambien

Childhood Obesity - Parents - It’s Your Fault Your Kids Are Fat

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

By Marie Lenay Rogus How often do you look at your overweight children and tell them they are too heavy? Do you tell them they have to stop eating so much? Do they feel guilty, embarrassed and not good enough because of it? Do you feel embarrassed for your child? Obesity in our children is rampant. Children are developing high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes. And guess what? It isnt their fault. Its your fault. Who buys the food and prepares the meals. Do you make a lunch for your child, or just give them money to buy whatever they want. And if you are buying the food and preparing the meals, and they are overweight and overeating, then they dont know how to eat correctly. So how can they make the good food choices if they dont know how? Here are some questions to ask yourself? Do you give your child cereal and juice for breakfast? What about Pop Tarts or breakfast bars? If so, you are taking their body out of balance and they are starting to develop insulin resistance, which is the bodys inability to properly process sugar. Cereal and fruit juices have such a high glycemic index that the body triggers insulin to bring down the sugar levels. When that happens, they remain hungry and crave foods that are usually high in sugar for the rest of the day. The body cannot properly process the sugar overload. The cells are too full of glucose, so they close down their receptors and send the sugar directly into fat storage. (For more information on this process and how this leads to the formation of cholesterol, see the link below.) You may think that the milk with the cereal will curb the sugar, but if your child is overweight you probably purchase non-fat milk. Its the fat in milk that helps modify the insulin response and curb hunger. Maybe you are fixing your child a peanut butter and jelly on white bread sandwich for lunch. Sometimes you give your child a banana with the sandwich. Nutrition experts on diabetes say that combining peanut butter with white bread increases the sugar level and strongly advise diabetics from having this combination. Peanut butter with celery or an apple is extremely nutritious and high in protein and fiber. A banana is extremely nutritious, but if your child is overweight, give them only a half, or slices of it mixed with other fruit because of the high glycemic value of the banana. An apple or pear or orange is a much better choice. The fiber is high and the glycemic values are low. Am I getting your attention? What about white bread (or wheat bread made with enriched flour)? Many children prefer white bread because thats all they know. Its light and fluffy and turns to sugar very quickly in the bloodstream. Look for stone ground whole wheat on the label to know that the bread nutrients are not tampered with. Food for Life has some wonderful bread made from sprouted grains that are nourishing, are filled with necessary B vitamins, and taste good. Your child probably couldnt even eat a whole sandwich, because bread rich in food value is filling. Speaking of white flour, you wouldnt ever just eat a teaspoon of white flour. Its really dead food. It has no food value. Are you really going to count the so-called enriched flour? This is such a joke on us. Flour manufacturers take out all of the real nutrients from the grain and add in some synthetic vitamins and call it enriched. Anything we make with it is made with shortening, which is a transfat. If we didnt add salt or sugar to it, the taste would be unpalatable. All white flour quickly turns to sugar in your bloodstream which raises the insulin to bring the sugar level down. Often its brought down too low so you get uncontrollably hungry. Is one piece of white bread enough for you? Dont you usually want more? Do you feed your child macaroni and cheese, and other pastas as a food staple because its easy to make and your kid likes it? Perhaps you serve it with a roll or crackers? Maybe you give your child fruit juice with it or a soft drink. Do you give them enough pasta to fill them up and add a small piece of meat and vegetable to the meal and think its balanced? What about potatoes? Kids love French fries and mashed potatoes. Potatoes in moderation are a good vegetable, high in potassium. But we serve potatoes as a staple, and potatoes are a high glycemic food that quickly turns to sugar in the bloodstream. How many times has your overweight child had white or enriched bread, pasta, crackers or potatoes this week? A child in normal sugar balance does not crave sugar and isnt stimulated by the idea of cookies, cakes, etc., unless its been longer than 3-4 hours since they have eaten. This is the time the sugar level drops naturally to signal hunger. How can you help? What can you do thats different? You can help your child get back into balance by following some of these weight loss tips: The most important thing to do is get rid of all snack foods and cereals high in carbohydrates and sugar. Get them out of the house! Then give your children 3 moderate meals and 2 planned protein-type snacks per day. Think protein for breakfast. Give them a hard-boiled egg, or any type of egg. Buy good, stone-ground or multi-grain bread. It has around 4 grams of protein. Put one fried egg on the bread. Use Smart Balance or a good new margarine without transfat with high omega 3 in it to cook the egg and put on the bread. Regular butter is also good for you. You can make French toast. Use low-sugar syrup. Give them a piece of bread with cottage cheese on it and a dollop of low-sugar jam. SmuckersTM has some excellent ones. Add a few walnut pieces. Melt some cheese on bread. Add low-fat milk and some fresh berries or apple or orange slices and you have a wonderful, nourishing breakfast that will give your child energy and help them concentrate. For lunch you can make a sandwich with one slice of whole grain bread, lunch meat and cheese and put mustard or butter on it. Add a piece of fruit and a handful of nuts. Have them buy milk at school. The 100 calories in milk is much better than a diet coke. Calcium has been proven to increase weight loss, and the protein will prevent the sugar drop. Ideally, your child should have protein as a snack 3 hours after each meal. Preferably the protein should have a little carb with it such as apple and cheese or peanut butter and apple or celery, cottage cheese and fruit, nuts, or plain milk or yogurt, or ham slices rolled up with cheese or a pickle. Yogurt sweetened with artificial sugars may stimulate the appetite. You will have to experiment. When your child comes home from school, or before dinner, have a vegetable platter ready with sliced zucchini, red bell pepper, olives, cherry tomatoes, asparagus, celery, carrots, turnips or fresh shelled peas and whatever else you want to put with it. Serve it with salsa, bean dip or ranch dressing. This is a great way for your child to learn to love vegetables. They like the crunch, and the dips add flavor. For dinner, think protein. Have any meat with vegetables and a little salad with dressing or fresh cut up fruit. If you make the vegetables fun to eat, children enjoy it. Slice zucchini lengthwise, wrap it in a paper towel and microwave it for 2 minutes. Then spray on Smart Balance or another butter substitute. Add some salt, pepper and herbs. Its delicious and easy to eat. Give them cut up fruit whenever they are hungry between meals. It takes longer to eat fruit that is cut up, like an apple or orange or pear. A good snack for after dinner is milk with fresh or frozen berries whipped up in a blender. Use one or two teaspoons of sugar. It only has 17 calories per teaspoon. Or use low-sugar syrup with it. For fat to burn efficiently during sleep, it is important not to eat for 11 hours between dinner and breakfast. Sleep is very important for proper weight loss. It may take up to five days to get the cravings for carbohydrates out of the system. Move toward it gradually to make it easier for your children to stop overeating. Once you start following these suggestions, you should notice not only weight loss, but less hyperactivity and irritability in your childs manner. They also should have more energy. Above all, remove the words fat, diet and overweight from your vocabulary when you speak to your children. What we focus on is what we become. Our self-talk becomes self-fulfilling prophecy. Children, especially those under eight years of age, take everything they hear as a programmed suggestion. What they hear becomes their belief system, especially if they feel emotionally hurt in any way. (C) 2006 - Marie Lenay Rogus Lenay Rogus has been a hypnotherapist since 1995. Counting Calories and Eating Healthy

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

By Cyrus Saharkhiz The importance of a healthy body cannot be stressed enough in the rapidly growing population of obesity and malnutrition. Something so simple as a nutritious meal is often ignored when it is dire. People must be educated about the responsibility of keeping the human body in good health. A balanced meal is important for every meal. Remember that calories are gained through eating, and it is important not to consume too many. Fruits, vegetables, and grains should be served in every meal. Eating fruits and vegetables are low in calories, and they also provide healthy amounts of fiber and vitamins that are important for helping the digestive sytem. Grains, such as pasta and bread, are also important for a healthy body. Grains are your main source of carbohydrates, which give you energy for the day. This should make up the largest portion of your diet. Meats and dairy products should be the next tier of your diet. Meat is an abundant source of protein. The body needs protein to grow and gunction properly. While many types of meat are healthy, some should be taken less than others. Try to avoid red meat, and focus on poultry and fish. Poultry and fish are healthier in general, as they contain less fat, and they supplement the body with protein. Many types of fish contain Omega-3 fats, which are very healthy, unlike saturated fat. Red meat, however, does provide the body with iron, an important tool in a growing body. Dairy products supply the body with essential nutrients and minerals, such as calcium. Calcium builds the bones of the body, so it is important to take in a lot of calcium during the growing stage, as children are typically told to do so. Low-fat milk, cheese, and yogurts are recommended. Cottage cheese is a very healthy alternative to regular cheddar or provolone. The most avoided foods in your diet are, as usual, fatty foods, such as sweet treats, salted snacks, or oils. Most of these items contain a heavy amount of saturated fat. As fat is also important for the body, saturated fat, unlike monounsaturated fat and Omega-3 fats, are very unhealthy. These snacks also contain high amounts of other unhealthy substances, such as sodium and sugar. These fattening foods will greatly increase the number of calories consumed. Therefore, fatty foods should be consumed in very small amounts, if any. Aside from a regular diet, water is always the most impotant supplement for your health. Drink at least 8 glasses of water per day, as water sustains almost every bodily function. Avoid other drinks, such as soda, sweet tea, and coffee. If anything, milk and fruit juices should be the only other liquids in the fridge. As it may seem hard for the first few days, developing this diet into a daily habit will prove to be helpful for many people. To keep track of your results, frequently record your data on a website, such as a calorie counting site, and check if you are meeting your recommended calorie intake. By doing this, people will soon be able to maintain perfect health and add many years to their life. Cyrus Saharkhiz is a website publisher and an avid computer geek. The Incredible Edible Olive

Monday, February 25th, 2008

By Lee Dobbins Olives have been eaten and the oil used since biblical times but it wasnt until recently that they have enjoyed so much press due to their cardioprotective properties. About 1/3 of the olive is monounsaturated fatty acid, commonly refereed to as the good fat which is thought to lower cholesterol levels and help prohibit the buildup of plaque in the arteries. Olives are grown mostly in the Mediterranean countries where they are a large part of the diet. Studies have shown that people in the Mediterranean regions who eat a lot of olives tend to have less heart disease as well as less incidence of certain types of cancer. The olives that we are used to seeing in the stores and eating are not fresh olives from the trees. In their raw state, olives are quite bitter and they must be cured in order to be palatable. Different methods of curing produce different flavors in the olives and today, there are dozens of gourmet olives widely available. Olives can be used to add zest to any dish - but you must pick the right olive to compliment the main food. Some olives can be salty, some sweet and others earthy and rustic. Heres a guide to the different types of olives and the foods they go best with. Sweet Flavored Olives Green olives with herbs de Provence have a vibrant citrus flavored and is a delightful blend of herbs de Provence spices and large green olives. It is an excellent choice to use in surf dishes and with sweet spices. Earthy Flavored Olives Nicoises is a earthy rich olive commonly used in salad. The curing of this olive in red-wine vinegar gives it a distinctive taste. Mount Athos green olives with sun-dried tomatoes are olives combined with sun dried tomatoes. The heavy flavor of this olive make it a great snack all by itself! Sun-dried olives have a rich flavor that blends wonderfully in sauces for serving over pasta. Spicy and Zesty Flavored Olives Mount Athos green with Sicilian herbs is another olive that utilizes herbs to dominate the pallet. Rosemary, garlic, mustard seed, and red pepper flakes give this olive a spicy appeal. Mount Athos green stuffed with garlic are olives stuffed with garlic and are great to zip up a martini or added on top of pizza. Kalamatas olives are black olives cured in red wine vinegar which results in a tangy taste. Alfonsos are similar in taste to the Kalamata and are often found served in antipastos. Another olive that is similar in taste to the Alfonsos and Kalamatas is the Halkididis which makes a great dip when mixed into cream cheese along with garlic. An olive that has a meaty buttery taste is the Lucques, which is great as a snack with cheese and bruchetta. A Powerful Way to Shed Fat and Keep It Off

Wednesday, February 20th, 2008

By Ty Ferrell The rules of burning fat and maintaining muscle are fairly simple. Fat only burns in the presence of oxygen. The process is called beta oxidation. Oxidation increases progressively during training. The rate of oxidation is specifically determined by the energy requirements of the muscle(s) in use, fatty acid delivery to the muscle (more specifically the muscle mitochondria), and the use of other sources of energy. The oxidative response of the muscle to proper training will also deny the fatty acids to rebuild on adipose tissue and allow even more use of fatty acids to skeletal muscle.(4) The big kicker and payoff for oxidation to continue is lypolysis . Lypolysis is the breakdown of fatty acids stored in fat cells (2). Bad news is the more advance you become at training your body the harder you have to train next time. The good news is the more your body is imposed to this demand for fat oxidation the more allotted fat it will oxidize. Slightly confused yet? It is a never ending process of getting one step ahead of your body. The more endurance savvy your body becomes the more efficient it will become with fat oxidation. What happens is your body will increase oxidation of fat BUT lipolysis will not increase. At this point the human body is saving you a lot of energy in your exercise sessions. In order, to lose more fatty tissue now the bodys composition must enhance muscle and size OR the endocrine system must become more at tune to attacking body fat and leaking GH (growth hormone). Supplementation of steroids is one option bodybuilder types have used to start up lipolysis again. For those wishing to do so naturally, putting the body into a ketogenic state from time to time should do the trick (more on this in a later article). Our main purpose is to increase fat oxidation to the point it is as optimal as LEGALLY and humanly possible. A smart colleague of mine explained it like this: A Honda Civic and Lamborghini Diablo sit in idle at a stoplight. Which one burns more fuel? It would be the Diablo for those who dont know much about cars. The reason.it has a bigger engine under the hood or trunk. whatever. This relates to us as well. Honda Civic type people are too efficient at what they do. They can not expect any change, unless they get a bigger engine (more muscle). Diablo type body is there ..Its that perfect body. It oxidizes (fuel) fat at a high rate no need to change just hold on and maintain. One way of getting fat to burn is using aerobic type output. Another way to get fat to burn is a process called EPOC (excessive post exercise oxygen consumption). A third way is certain combinations of food will cause a thermo effect when eaten. But, we will keep to the training methods for this article. The human body has a main purpose to survive. Looking as good as you can naked doesnt quite fall in the bodys protocol. The body will maintain as much muscle that is needed to meet the demands of your life on any given day. Also, the body must protect itself from a possible nuclear winterand the way the world is going, it might just need it.so it insulates the vital organs (mainly around the core area) with adipose tissue (fat). Fat oxidation can happen by aerobics and other forms of energy systems training. A dreadful long term 25k jog on the treadmill will yield fat oxidation, but it will also use just about everything else in the body to get done. Aerobics burns calories. There is a supposed fat burning zone and caloric burning zone. The fat burning zone is at a lower heart rate. This theoretically will allow for the body to only use fat. The caloric burning zone is higher and will burn calories including calories coming from fat. The major problem with the fat burning zone is the gawd forsaken length of time you have to do it in. It simply is not optimal or efficient for most lifestyles to do aerobics for close to an hour. Not only that, the amount of fat is very minimal and your body easily adapts and prevents anymore major caloric burning. The second type is the caloric zone. This type of aerobics will be a shorter term for time. It is much more optimal in time, but it comes with a fallback. It burns fat and can easily burn muscle up as well. One way to prevent or minimize the cannibalization of the hard earned muscle is to do resistance training before aerobics. Most likely the body will not make a meal out of the muscles that were just used. Also, resistance training uses more fat as fuel than aerobics. This comes with another catch. The body attempts to set up an allotment of fatty acids needed for a given workout. If the workout was efficient enough it can be coupled with a form of aerobics training to get the after burn effect. Another form of aerobics is high intensity interval training (HIIT). This method can be a hybrid between aerobics and resistance training. More effectively it is a maximal/ low impact aerobic training effort. HIIT can be coupled with training to make the fat oxidation process as fast as humanly known. For average Joe or Jane, fat oxidation with aerobics is its highest at a low to moderate intensity. However, advanced to elite athletes will find the highest fat oxidation when more a demanding intensity is placed on the body (5, 2). Maximum oxygen consumption type intensity would be a wise choice for a more advanced athlete/trainee. This training is about 3 -5 minutes long. 80 -85% of max force must be applied for short bursts, while longer duration can fall to moderate max force (1). EPOC is an effect more than a way of training. Although fat oxidation will happen during a resistance training session, it is only after doing resistance training that the body will go through EPOC. What it actually does is attempt to bring itself to a recovery normal state, after the trauma of the session. The body actually produces a more fat oxidation effect as it calms itself and recovers. This effect can happen up to a few hours after training. Aerobics alone will most likely produce a catabolic effect. Hence, a more moderate to low intensity of training will allow for greater fat oxidation (2, 3, 5). Carbohydrates (glycolysis) metabolism is the predominant method the body uses when being hit with a high intensity workout. This will also block fat oxidation. (2, 4) Training will also have to elicit bigger muscles and more joint synergy for optimal fat oxidation. So, dont waste time with leg curls, tricep kickbacks and other small time body movements. (2) When it comes to burning the maximum amount of fat while sparing the muscle, these two methods should be combined. First, resistance training will spark the flame that begins to grow as the session goes. Next aerobics will take the flame and bring about an inferno. Finally, the EPOC effect will continue the fat burning for hours after training. This is fat oxidation at its finest and the key to shedding the unwanted fat and maintaining muscle. References:1. Maintaining Your Sanity While Planning Your Wedding

Monday, February 18th, 2008

By Penny Olson Not long ago, I went to my hometown to help my mother and my sister with the final planning for my Sister’s wedding. About five days before the wedding, we were running errands and my sister turned to me and said that she has resigned to the fact that she probably will be too preoccupied to enjoy her wedding day. I was absolutely blown away by this. She was going to marry the man that she loves with all of her heart and for the day that would begin the rest of her life, she had settled for endurance rather than joy. When you have spent 18 months of intense planning to bring together all of the people that are important to you, it is incredibly easy to loose sight of what really matters. You get caught up in all of the minor details that most people feel are necessary, but when it comes down to it, if you leave the chapel, beach, your home or wherever you choose to “tie the knot”, and you are married to the person that you want to spend the rest of your life with, then your mission has been accomplished. Usually when we plan weddings, we are receiving monetary assistance from our families. Many times there is an assumption that we have to please them and make them happy too. This is not the case at all. It is a day for you and your fianc to share with your friends and family, so it should show your style, not your parents or your future in-laws’. I have found through personal experience, that if you try to make everyone happy, you have the potential to create a tremendous amount of chaos and stress for yourself. This will only complicate matters and ends up being a case of “Too many cooks in the kitchen”. The next tip for maintaining your sanity is about choices. When you start your planning you will quickly notice that you have set yourself free in a world where there are endless possibilities and options from which you can choose. It is a good idea to stick to your decisions once they have been made. I have worked with many brides that have changed their color scheme a few months into it, or have continued to look at venues once they have already made deposits. There are always going to be things that you see that you wish you would have known about throughout your time in wedding world. But if you continue to bounce from theme to theme or color to color, you will only waste time and energy and decrease the possibility of enjoying this once-in-a-lifetime experience. I also feel that it helps you relax if you designate times for your wedding planning. Due to sheer excitement, you will find that you have “wedding on the brain” and may think about it 24-7. Pick a couple of days a week and set aside a time slot to surf the internet or make phone calls to schedule appointments, this will keep you from becoming totally consumed and also give you a chance to focus on the rest of the life that is still happening around you. Delegate, delegate, delegate. When I am asked to be an attendant in a wedding, I assume that I am taking on a responsibility. It is my job to help in any way that I can, even if it means to simply be there if the bride needs someone to unload some frustrations. But the point of saying this is that your bridesmaids are there for you, and most of the time, they are more than happy to have the opportunity to lend a hand. So dont be afraid to ask for help or make small task lists for your attendants and always remember to say thanks. This will take a lot of the weight off of your shoulders and make your bridesmaids feel as though they are needed. Finally, this is your wedding day!!! In the weeks prior to the event, take a few minutes everyday to go to a quiet place and count your blessings. Write them down so that, in times of stress you can refer back to them, smile and relax. Remember, your wedding day may be the first day of your new lives together, but it is nurturing your marriage that is what will truly bring you years of happiness. Applying for and Getting Social Security Disability Benefits

Saturday, February 16th, 2008

By Kelley Wiseman The process of applying for and getting Social Security Disability is very long and convoluted; hopefully, this article will shed some light on the things one can do to smooth out the process and what to expect along the way. Once you have become disabled, do two things immediately, Consult a competent disability attorney. Start the application process with the Social Security Administration. This link will take you directly to the Social Security website where you can find out more about applying online and the guidelines for disability. Once you have started the process, the SSA will do two things, they will send you paperwork to be filled out and signed so that they may obtain medical records. It would be helpful here if you compiled a list of every doctor, hospital, clinic etc you have been to in the past 2 years. The more accurate information you can give them at this step the better it will be when they request the records for review later in the process. Secondly, they will schedule a phone interview with you to ask some general questions about your working years, family etc. They will be able to tell you at this stage approximately how much disability you could receive each month if approved and also in you qualify for Social Security Supplemental Income. The amount you may receive depends on factors such as family size, years worked, overall wages etc. The SSA will also send paperwork to be completed that concerns your disability directly and how it affects your everyday life. They ask numerous questions concerning ability to work, mobility, daily living, personal care etc. Answer them in as much specific detail as possible because this is one of the main documents that the examiners will review when deciding your case, so the more that you can tell them about how it affects your life the better. Your attorney can guide you in completing this paperwork. Once all the paperwork is completed it will be sent, in most states, to the state disability determination bureau. The SAA has contracts with most states so that the state examiners review the first step of the application process for the SSA. This review can take as much as 6 - 9 months. There is really nothing you can do at this stage other than gather any new medical records you may have and keep in contact with your attorney as he may advise you to make regular visits to your physician so that current documentation of your disability will be available for the second stage of the process. I should point out one thing here, over 85% of all disability applicants fail at this stage, so do not get discouraged when you are not approved. It would be much better going into this stage expecting not to be approved. The SSA does this to weed out those who really do not qualify for disability or even need it. The SSAs theory is, if the applicant is really disabled, they will be persistent and continue the process. The second stage of the process is where a good disability attorney will be of great help. This stage is called the reconsideration stage. Your attorney will file an appeal with the SSA requesting a reconsideration of your case based on certain facts. This is where the new medical documentation can be submitted to help your case. This stage generally takes about 3 months for the reconsideration. The sad fact is you are just as likely to get turned down at this stage as you were at the first stage. Once you have received the reconsideration denial from the SSA, consult with your attorney about the third stage of the process, the Administrative Hearing. This process is by far the longest of the three, but the good news is that more than 85% of the cases get approved at this stage. So hang in there!! Your attorney will file the paperwork with the SSA requesting an Administrative Hearing before the Administrative Law Judge. Once the SSA receives your request, it can be anywhere from 9 months to 12 months before getting the actual hearing. This depends upon which state you live in and how many Administrative Law Judges hear the cases. I know in my particular case, in Indiana, they have 3 judges that hear the cases for Indiana and some of the surrounding states so it can take many, many months to get to the actual hearing. Once the hearing is scheduled, the SSA will send you and your attorney a notice of hearing, 20 days prior to the date of the hearing. Your attorney will then consult with you on how the hearings work, what questions the judges may ask, what questions he/she may ask you etc. The hearing can be a scary thing, but your attorney will guide you and the judges understand your feelings so just answer all questions to the best of your ability. Once your case has been approved, the Administrative Law Judge can issue a ruling for immediate payments. You will receive a lump sum payment from the SSA that covers from the sixth month after you first applied to the current month, the SSA has a 6 month waiting period before disability payments can begin even in the cases that get approved in the first stage. After the lump sum payment you will receive monthly checks. As you can see, the process for getting SSA disability is indeed long and tedious, but having a good attorney and being prepared for each stage can go along way in smoothing out the process an easing your fears. This article is just an outline of the process of applying and the pitfalls one may encounter along the way, but hopefully one can gain some insight into the process an know what to expect. K.D.
