All We Hear About Is - Fat, Part 1 Of Our Mini Series On Fat

Wednesday, December 19th, 2007

By Andrew Gee The following article is one of a series of articles which focus on Self Improvement, Motivation and Empowerment. It is based on research done over twenty years as a personal and business coach. This self improvement article was written in response to questions which have been asked on losing weight and long term weight loss as well as address common challenges that people have with this subject. I sincerely hope that you find the following information of value. All We Hear About Is - Fat Most of us are focused on fat. It is all that we hear about these days. Since the time we are kids we are told that fat is bad for us. Some people are more worried about calories than fat. To be honest you should be worried about both. You need to make sure that your diet isn’t full of junk food. You should be getting your calories from foods that are good for you. Who cares about not eating any fat, if all your calories come from sweets? I’m not sure how much I believe fat is the bad thing we make it out to be. I’m starting to believe that carbs are the real evil in the diet empire. I really do think this is why so many people are overweight in this world. Think about it like this. How many cultures in the world eat bread? Most of them eat some sort of bread. Bread for some people is the focus of the meal. In the old days, women spent all day long making breads. This is also true with pasta in some regions of the world. A lot of places eat some sort of pasta with every meal. What about rice? The same thing. The Irish and potatoes? The same thing. These are all carbs. Most people eat these every day of their lives. I think we are addicted to carbs. I know I am. I eat so much bread and other carbs that I don’t know what I would do without them. That, adds a tire around the waste line. I’m not saying that carbs are worse than fat per se. I mean, fat has its problems too. You eat too much of it, you are getting yourself ready for a heart attack. I mean, your body can only handle so much of them. We have all seen young men get heart attacks at an early age. So, we know that fat is bad. ========SIDEBAR======== When it comes to the subject of self improvement, I fully understand (through my own experiences) that it is a lot easier said than done. However, you are here, right now, because you have a desire to improve your self or you are at least interested in this subject. Perhaps you are reading this to help a friend or colleague - great. If this article helps you or you help a friend, paying it forward is what lif’e all about so we all win. ======END SIDEBAR====== Not all fat is the same though. Some fat is worse than others. Let’s talk about these different kinds of fat. We have items that are lower in saturated fat. These would include meats and cheeses. They don’t have as much fat as the items we will be talking about next. On the other hand, you have items that are more saturated than meats and cheese. These tend to be anything deep fried. They will include, donuts, french fries, potato chips. The second is what you need to stay away from. These are high in calories. They also will clog your arteries. I hate to say it, but the good stuff in life has its risks. I’m not saying that you shouldn’t ever eat these items, but eat them in moderation. That is the key. Don’t eat them every day, but once per week. Don’t go hog wild on a whole bag of chips. Instead, get a small bag that is enough for one or two servings. This way, you won’t be tempted to eat the whole bag. Oils such as olive oil are low in saturated fats. You should use these when ever you can. Having moved to Spain, this is one thing I learned very quickly. Keep in mind though, you should only use a little of oil. Make sure to always use non stick cookware. This is a must and a great investment for your health. By using non stick cookware you won’t have to use as much oil when cooking. If you get the good stuff, you might not have to use any at all. I think that you should watch your caloric intake as well as your fat. I would say that they should go hand in hand. I would pay close attention to how much carbs you are eating each day. I know that I sound like a broken record, but I do think people are too dependant on them. They are a good source of energy, but you will feel burnt out if you eat them too much. I think you know what I am talking about. You feel like you need a nap all the time. There are also health risks involved with a diet high in fat. You are at higher risk of having sugar problems and heart disease. Plus a whole host of cancers that most people don’t have a risk for. People who eat high fat diets also have skin problems. I think people who eat too much fat have very bad complexion. Their skin almost looks like leather. I hope that you don’t finish reading this and think that you should cut out all of the fat in your diet. That isn’t my intention. Instead, you should look at the big picture. Why Men Don’t Ask For Directions

Tuesday, December 18th, 2007

By Alison Armstrong A complaint so common it is the subject of jokes and TV comedies is the unwillingness of lost men to ask for directions. Almost every woman has a story about a man who drove around for hours looking for some place and refused her entreaties to stop and ask someone for directions. To women, this seems like the ultimate display of male arrogance and stubbornness. But what if it isnt? It is important to understand that men are NEVER lost. To him, that implies a helplessness that he will never willingly experience. He simply hasnt gotten there yet and he has complete faith in his ability to do so. Also, a mans unwillingness to stop and ask for directions is consistent with his survival instincts and actually not stubborn at all. First, the act of stopping the car, and rolling down the window, makes him (and you) more vulnerable than he is willing to be just to get some place faster. Second, from a mans point-of-view, the moment he asks a gas station attendant, or someone on the street, for directions, he has put his life and yours in the hands of a stranger! Men, wisely, only put their lives in the hands of people who have proven themselves trustworthy. The way he sees it, you are both better off searching for your location yourselves than being at the mercy of the judgment of someone he doesnt know and trust. Why has he never told you this? According to our research, this is because, to him, it is obvious. Every man already knows this and something that everyone already knows requires no explanation. It is a mystery to him why you seem to have forgotten this basic rule of survival. On the other hand, maps are the be-all and end-all of travel. With a map, a man can make a solid decision based on reliable information. And the systems available on many new model cars, with built-in maps and global positioning satellite, are the ultimate tool for navigating a dangerous world. If your car doesnt have one of these fancy new gizmos, your best bet is to stock up on maps at the Auto Club, or buy a Thomas Guide. Keep your supply of maps in your car (or travel bag) and learn how to read them. It is important to suggest a route coming from being a member of the travel team, instead of righteously proving he is incompetent. A woman who understands and even likes reading maps becomes a highly valued travel partner. To quote men, a woman who happily reads maps becomes useful in the hunt, and is awesome and nearly perfect. Instead of feeling frustrated and ignored while he is trying to find some place, if youre consulting a map, youll find a man more than willing to follow your directions. A side note: there is another unfamiliar landscape in which a man wont ask for directions but will sure appreciate them your body. A panel of men at Celebrating Men & Sex was asked, What do you think about a woman giving you directions in bed? One man stated the case for all. He replied, Directions, maps, diagrams all useful information is appreciated! Be Good to Your Skin

Monday, December 17th, 2007

By Alisha Burke If you are one of the many people that were born with sensitive skin, than you will understand how frustrating it can be to deal with. Not only do you have to deal with dry, itchy, and sometimes red skin, you have to be careful when choosing skin care products because many of the chemicals can irritate your delicate complexion. But Im here to tell you that as long as you know how to take care of your sensitive skin, youll find that living with it isnt so bad, and that one day you may in fact learn to love it. Its important to find out what type of sensitive skin you have. Do you sunburn easily? Is your skin often itchy? Do you blush easily? If you answered yes to these questions then most likely you were born with sensitive skin. If your skin only seems to react to certain skin care products, stressors, or foods, then its probably only triggered sensitive skin. This type of skin can be managed by avoiding the products that cause irritation. Probably the biggest thing you can do for your sensitive skin would be to keep it moisturized. Since this type of skin typically tends to be dry as well, the proper moisturizing lotion is very important. Find a cream that has been dermatologist-tested or says for sensitive-skin directly on the bottle. Remember to use fragrance-free lotions, creams, soaps, and shaving gels because the added fragrance can irritate your skin. I remember the day I could no longer use my favorite vanilla-scented body lotion because instead of giving me silky smooth skin it left me with a rash. Protection from the sun is a daily essential. The harsh rays of the sun are particularly damaging to delicate sensitive skin. Be sure to use a sunscreen with at least an SPF 30, and take lots of shady breaks. If you do spend time in the sun, make sure you moisturize afterwards because your skin will dry out quickly. An aloe Vera gel is a great for after-sun conditioning. Controlling breakouts can be another battle for people with sensitive skin, because many of the bacterial-fighting chemicals in standard acne treatments are too harsh on your skin. Benzoyl peroxide in particular can do some considerable damage (trust me, this is from firsthand experience) to sensitive skin, so try to avoid this ingredient. As a rule, dont wash your face with medicinal cleansers more than once a day, and do not leave them on the skin for a long period of time. Live and learn! The best way to find out what is good or bad for your skin is through trial and error, because everyones skin reacts differently. Just remember that certain products are more prone to causing skin irritations, including perfume, hairspray, scented deodorant, and even the glue on band-aids. Just remember to think of your skin before slathering on some ambiguous product. But if you take care of your sensitive skin, it will be good to you as well by looking clear, soft and beautiful. Alisha Burke loves getting facials. When she is not daydreaming about her next trip to the spa, she writes for yourskin101.com an online resource dedicated to helping you care for your skin, with information about skin care, sensitive skin, skin care products and more. Weight Loss Success - A Nutritionist’s 10 BEST Tips

Saturday, December 15th, 2007

By Lori Pirog You’ve heard it before, possibly more times than you care to remember. To lose weight simply eat less and exercise more. The problem is there could be nothing further from the truth. The concept is true–eat less and exercise more–but there is nothing simple about weight loss! Don’t let anyone try to convince you otherwise. I could spend hours, no maybe days or weeks explaining why it is difficult. However, I imagine that isn’t necessary because you already know just how hard it can be. What’s worse is that losing the weight is only half the battle. Keeping the weight off can be even more difficult! However, there is a secret to successful weight loss. Unfortunately, many people who learn this secret fail to recognize its power. Instead they are like those who seek a get-rich-quick scheme. They are easy targets for the next clever marketer who promises to reveal how to lose weight fast without a proper diet or exercise! 1. The secret or single most important concept to keep in mind for successful long-term weight loss has been well proven. You must choose a healthy diet and lifestyle that you can maintain for the rest of your life. That’s it. Did you know that the true meaning of a diet is simply what you eat? You are already on a diet of your own choosing whether you think of it that way or not. The good news is that you have control over what you select for your diet. And every day offers you an opportunity to make small changes to improve. Small changes maintained over time can result in significant results–weight loss, looking better, feeling better, and reduced risk for illness and disease. The remaining 9 tips will teach you what you need to keep in mind when making changes to your diet. 2. Choose to eat lots of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and beans. The benefits of these choices are enormous! These foods are chock full of vitamins, minerals, fiber, and healthy phytochemicals. Vitamins and minerals work overtime to keep your body functioning properly. Fiber adds bulk to the food you eat, gives you a sense of fullness and satisfaction, and keeps your digestive system working smoothly. Phytochemicals are the new kids on the block. They are the source of healthy antioxidants and other compounds that benefit us in a multitude of ways scientists have only begun to discover. Add a small amount of lean meat and fish, and low-fat milk products to round out and balance your diet. But give emphasis to the fruits, vegetables, whole grains and beans. 3. Eat fewer refined carbohydrates. Yes, this means cutting back or eliminating sweets and refined breads and cereals. Instead choose to eat whole grains whenever possible. Look for whole grain listed first on the ingredient list and products with more than two grams of fiber per serving. Four or more grams per serving are better. 4. Drink lots of water! Six to eight glasses of water are best. Tea and a small amount of fruit juice can be a source of some of that water. Reduce or eliminate your consumption of additional fruit juice, sugary drinks, or alcoholic beverages. 5. Avoid highly processed foods with added sugars, artificial sweeteners or excessive fat. Many low-fat cookies, cakes, chips, crackers, and desserts are high in refined carbohydrates and calories and have little or no fiber. 6. Determine how many calories you actually need. Be realistic! Calculate your basal metabolic rate and calculate the additional energy (calories) you need for daily activities. Most women need a minimum of 1200 calories and men 1600 calories a day to prevent their metabolism from slowing down. 7. Keep a food diary to keep track of your food choices and count calories at least for a week or two. Putting in the time and effort to do this may not be fun. But the benefits are HUGE. You will likely gain some essential insight about your current food habits and what you need to do to change. 8. Learn what triggers you to overeat. Jot some notes in your food diary each time you reach for food. Were you actually hungry or were you eating just because the food was there and you could? Was the food a reward or means of soothing your anger or frustration after a difficult day? The key here is having an understanding of what you are feeling before you eat. This gives you the option to make a different choice. 9. Get support! Whatever the challenge you might be facing, having family or friends who are supportive is a big help! However, be aware of those who may want you to stay just as you are and instead of helping actually sabotage your efforts. 10. Exercise! What can I say? Exercise matters! Be creative and find a form of exercise that you will like. Take these suggestions to heart. Make one small change at a time. Added up the changes you make with your diet and lifestyle could mean significant weight loss and better health for years to come! Want more weight loss tips and strategies? Keeping Up With Application Process Deadlines

Saturday, December 15th, 2007

By Amber C. Smith A common mistake by many prospective students is that they don’t keep up with the deadlines for the application process. They simply get all the materials together, stuff them in a drawer, and find them the week before the deadline. Or, they may even miss the deadline all together. Make sure that you keep up with application process deadlines carefully. Here are a few to look for in your materials. Application Deadline First of all, look for the normal application deadline. For most schools, the deadline for the spring semester is in November and the fall semester deadline is in March. You should also find out whether the deadline is for mail postmarked by that date or whether it must be received by that date. Early Admittance Deadline Many schools also have an early admittance deadline. If you turn in your documents by this date, then you can find out several months early whether or not your got into the school. You may also receive other benefits like a lower application fee or some type of discount if you come to the school. Test Score Deadline Many schools consider that most students will have to take tests in order to gain admittance, and sometimes these tests are a few days off from the application deadlines. Thus, many schools have a separate deadline or a grace period during which they will still accept your test scores. Financial Aid Deadline Schools will also set a financial aid deadline. If you wish to pay for your schooling with loans, there will be a day by which the school will need all the loan material. If you fail to fill everything out, you may not be able to start school when you wish. Scholarship Deadline If you are looking for scholarship money, you will need to find out the deadline for filling out scholarship materials. For large scholarships this is often early in the year since the process will be longer and more in depth. There will also be a date for graduate assistantship applications as well. Crape Myrtle ‘Dynamite’ (PP 10296)

Saturday, December 15th, 2007

By Alan Summers A Hardy Crape Myrtle Tree with True Red Blooms Crape Myrtles are a popular choice for gardeners because of their low maintenance, beautiful colors and extremely long bloom season, lasting nearly three and a half months. Crape Myrtles are most popular in the south, gaining the nickname the lilac of the south, but are enjoyed by gardeners across the country. Their scientific term, Lagerstroemia, was coined in 1759 in order to honor Magnus von Lagerstroem, an avid naturalist. The common name in America, Crape Myrtle, is derived from the crape-like appearance of the flower and the resemblance of the foliage to the real myrtle, Myrtus Communis. This week we are featuring a hardy Crape Myrtle tree with incredible huge ruby red blooms without even a hint of pink- ‘Dynamite’ - - the truest red of any Crape Myrtle tree. Developed by Oaklahoma’s Dr. Carl Whitcomb in 1998, ‘Dynamite’ produces abundant clusters of absolutely spectacular deep red flowers from crimson buds they will enliven your garden from mid summer until autumn. The blooms can reach 15 inches long and of course have the crape paper look that we love. The foliage starts as a deep burgundy in the spring and changes into a dark green by the end of summer. The leaves are very large, semi-glossy very thick and mildew resistant. In the fall the foliage turns from orange to red. ‘Dynamite’ exfoliates it’s old gray bark to reveal the new light brown smooth bark underneath. Plant as a specimen tree; prune into a large multi-stemmed shrub, or plant several in a row to create a unique privacy hedge. Planting and Care ‘Dynamite’ has a very expansive and upright growth habit and matures to a height of 20 feet. It prefers to be placed in full sun with well-drained soil and good air circulation. Dynamite requires little maintenance and does best when it is not pruned. It is also drought, disease and insect resistant once it is established. Plant 15 feet apart in well-drained soil. Prefers full sun in an area with good air circulation and good soil drainage. Water regularly until established. Hardy in Zones 6-9 (protect the first winter in Zone 6). Fertilize with Plant-Tone and Kelp Meal in early spring. When necessary, prune in spring just as the new leaves emerge Alan Summers, president of Carroll Gardens, Inc., has over 30 years experience in gardening and landscape design. To Reduce Credit Cards Cumbers - Avail Loans The Unsecured Way

Thursday, December 13th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Andrew_Baker]Andrew Baker Credit cards, commonly known as plastic money are mainly used as substitute of cash. With these cards, customers get a chance to spend up to a certain credit limit, even when their accounts do not have similar balance. Due to this reason, many people presently are using 3-4 credit cards abruptly. There fore, facing credit card debt problem has become a common factor in present times. Generally credit card holders need to make a minimum payment within a fixed date of each month. If one fails to make the payment on time, then there is possibility of hefty fee that gradually transforms into a big debt burden. In such cases credit card loans work well to manage these debts. And moreover these loans are available in unsecured form as well. With the method of credit card loans, all credit card debts are brought under a new lender. In this option, a borrower takes a new loan that is equaled with the amount of his credit card debts. Later, with this loan either borrower can pay off his debts personally or on the borrowers behalf, the new lender can do it. Altogether these loans act as a credit card debt consolidation loan. [http://www.ukfinanceworld.co.uk/uk_unsecured_personal_loan.html]Credit card loans are available in two forms, secured and unsecured. In secured form, collateral is required against the loan amount. On the other hand, unsecured credit card loans are available without any collateral. So this loan options are the best option for tenants and for those who do not want to use their property against the loan amount. But for opting for unsecured option, borrowers requires to submit some information including the proof of his income, financial standing, credit score etc. However, borrowers should be aware of three main factors while applying for an unsecured credit card loan. These factors are referred below: The first and foremost factor is the rate of interest or APR. Mainly people apply for unsecured credit card loan for escaping from high rate of interest. So the rate of interest of credit card loans should not be equally higher. And this is the first thing that borrowers must check before availing a credit card loan. Usually, due to the absence of collateral the rate of interest is relatively high on unsecured credit card loan, but by searching for the best deal, one can find out an unsecured credit card loan at suitable interest rate. Checking the repayment period is also equally important. Borrowers should try to repay their amount within a certain period of time. Do remember, unnecessary stretching of term period means bearing unnecessary debt burden. At the same time, monthly repayment is also a matter of concern while borrowers applying for unsecured credit card loans. Monthly repayment should be commensurate with borrowers repayment capacity. Unsecured credit card loan is an overwhelming opportunity for borrowers to manage their credit card debts. As these loans are unsecured, thus with these loans all sorts of borrowers can defeat their credit card debt difficulties. Andrew Baker has done his masters in finance from CPIT. How To Get Rid Of Ants

Thursday, December 13th, 2007

By James Winston Ants belong to the group of insects the same as the wasps and bees. There are sterile female workers and productive males (drones) and females (queens). Ants colonies are sometimes thought to be super organisms because the gathering appears to operate as a single entity. Ants have colonized every land mass on Earth. The only places where there seems to be no ants are Antarctica, Greenland, Iceland, and the Hawaiian Islands. Most species of ants are tropical. Contemporary civilization considers the ant a nuisance, and due to the resilient and adaptive nature of ant colonies getting rid of one is near impossible. Pest control in terms of ants is more a matter of controlling local populations than trying to get rid of an entire colony. Efforts to control ant populations are only temporary solutions. Control of populations are usually done with insecticides, which is gathered by the ants as food and then brought back to the nest where the poison is inadvertently spread to other members of the litter — a scheme that can strictly reduce the numbers in a colony. Boric acid and borax are often used as insecticides that are relatively safe for humans. Many insects that are considered as plant pests are controlled by using grease rings on the trunks of the trees. These rings cut off the routes for ants and make them vulnerable to parasites and predators. For the Red Imported Fire Ant, one would have to employ a scheme called broadcast baiting by which the substance is spread across a large area, such as a lawn, in order to control populations. Nests can be destroyed by tracing the ants’ trails back to the nest, then pouring boiling water into it to kill the queen. Trying to kill ants individually is totally ineffective. Ants can sometimes indirectly cause pest infestations through interaction with other insects. James Winston has developed many websites over the years in many different businessareas. He is a professional web developer/designer/research specialist. He has a Free ContentResearch Website with How to control Ants Without Poison. Making Homemade Gizmos For Fun - Inexpensive And Rewarding Projects

Wednesday, December 12th, 2007

By Alan Detwiler Making simple devices is fun for any young person who likes to tinker and build. The build-it-yourself enthusiast will get a great sense of accomplishment from creating self-designed items. In most cases, common materials and items from around the house are all that is needed. You may need to purchase some inexpensive items such as glue or small nails. Many simple devices can be made with tools that most people already have such as scissors, hammer and pliers. Simple devices can be built in between 15 minutes and 1 hour. Particularly involved projects may take many hours to complete. The items made could be useful, artistic, or clever. A variety of types of projects can be made: toys and playthings, curiosities and novelties, useful and practical items. There are books written particularly for the adolescent or young adult who enjoys making interesting mechanical devices and gadgets. A good book is written to make constructing the described items easy. Projects are described using clear wording. Diagrams are included to assist in ease of understanding. Choose a book that has these features: Most casual do-it-yourselfers will have the needed items around the house and/or garage. Only low cost and no cost materials are needed. Most items are made from small pieces of wooden boards, coat hanger wire, paper, used containers, and discarded household items or low cost items found in hardware stores. There are no kits to buy. The projects require common tools such as a scissors, hacksaw, screwdriver, pliers, knife, file or drill. Books are available on a wide variety of projects. Books can be choosen that deal mostly with items that are mechanically interesting or clever. The items may be simple mechanical curiosities, appealing because of their shape or structure. Or choose a book specifically about toys and playthings. Or go for whatever type of homemade creations appeal to you. One particular category is improvised devices. These are homemade items made from whatever materials that happen to be available. The items typically serve some purpose but may be appealing for some other reason. Building them is especially fun because the finished item is a kind of trophy for the builder’s ingenuity and self-reliance. And you have the finished item to admire and to use for whatever purpose it serves. Symbiotic Relationships

Tuesday, December 11th, 2007

By Kent Pinkerton Relationships are inevitable for any living being whether it is an animal, a plant, a microscopic organism or a human being. Symbiotic relationships are relationships where two organisms of different species live and work together, each one of them benefiting from mutual cooperation. This term is generally used in biology for explaining the relationship between two entities that need each other to survive and prosper. A common example for symbiotic relationships is that both the human as well as the animal kingdom is dependent on the oxygen produced by the plant kingdom. Conversely, plants depend on animals and humans for carbon dioxide to prepare their food. Another example of this relationship is that of the bee and the flower. Bees get nectar from flowers. Pollination also takes place when the bee flies from one flower to another. Some of the common symbiotic relationships include humans and cultivated plants, humans and domesticated animals, as well as small mammals and hypogenous fungi. There are different kinds of symbiotic relationships. They vary according to the behavior and characteristics of the species. Each type of symbiotic relationship is given a separate name by ecologists. A relationship in which both the species benefit is called mutualism, usually referred to as a symbiotic relationship. The process in which only one species benefits whereas the other is unaffected is termed commensalism. Parasitism is a relationship in which one species benefits and the other is harmed. When neither of the species benefits, it is competition. The last category is neutralism, where both species remain unaffected. Among the humans also you can see symbiotic relationships. Let us take the case of a venture capitalist and an entrepreneur. The capitalist needs investment opportunities provided by the entrepreneur.
