Using Your Fresh Herbs In Infusions, Herbal Teas, or Decoctions As An Herbal Medicine

Monday, August 27th, 2007

By Mary Hanna Recently it has been shown that high herbal tea and quality teas have many health benefits, especially Black and Green Tea. With all the news on Black and Green Tea lately, you may be considering adding it to your daily diet regime. If that is so, only use the best quality and freshest tea available for the maximum health benefits. Also consider the health benefits of herbal teas using fresh herbs. Think of these as herbal medicine. Millions of people all of the world have been drinking tea and infusions for centuries specifically for herbal medicine. In America, it has been considered a cheap convenient drink for soothing the soul and stimulating the senses. Yet there is a far more important reason that people drink tea more than any other beverage: the tea leaf has potent health-enhancing powers. The Japanese have known this for thousands of years and the modern West is just catching up to the remarkable health benefits of drinking tea. To make a tea or infusion you must steep the fresh herb in boiling water. Many think of teas and infusions as the same, but there is a slight difference. When making teas or herbal teas you are brewing it and you dont leave it steeping for very long. An easy way to brew it is to place the tea bag or fresh herbs into a measuring cup with 8 ounces of water. Microwave for two minutes and you have a cup of tea. Fresh herbs make a marvelous cup of tea and are considered essential in herbal medicine. Infusions on the other hand stay in the boiling water longer, anywhere from 10 20 minutes. Obviously the longer the fresh herbs steep the stronger the brew will become and it will become a more potent herbal medicine. Infusions should be used immediately after brewing to reap the most out of this herbal medicine, especially when using fresh herbs. Rule of thumb is to use 1-2 teaspoons of dried, crushed, or powdered herbs. If you want to get the most out of this herbal medicine use fresh herbs and double the amount to steep. After the steeping time your infusion will be at room temperature. It is okay to warm it back up if you prefer it hot. Infusions can be therapeutic as well as being considered herbal medicine. While your infusion is steeping bend over the container and breathe in the steam. This will act as a decongestion when you are suffering from colds or allergies. Close your eyes, try to envision this herbal medicine as attacking the germs in your system. Visualizing the fresh herb infusions attacking the malady will help to fight illnesses quite well, according to some published studies. It is like the grounding technique used in yoga. Here again, fresh herbs make the best infusions in herbal medicine. There is a problem with infusions as they tend to be quite bitter. And of course, if you cant drink the infusion then it will not be an advantageous herbal medicine. To make it taste better try adding honey or sugar. If you still cant get it down, try a different infusion. There are many different fresh herbs to try when brewing your herbal medicine. Decoctions are a different story as they dont use strictly fresh herbs. Here you would use the dried roots, flowers seeds and barks for their medicinal purposes, not fresh herbs. To get the most from your mixture heat will be used since it is more difficult to extract their active chemicals. Start by boiling the roots and allow them a good head start. Next add the bark, the seeds, the flowers and any spices in that order. Allow a few minutes of simmering after each addition. Then simmer the herbal medicine slowly for 10 to 20 minutes. Now you have another use for your fresh herbs. This gives you yet another excuse to plant a beautiful herb garden Happy Healthy Gardening! Copyright Mary Hanna, All Rights Reserved. Not So Scary: Studying for the GRE the Right Way

Saturday, August 25th, 2007

By Amber C. Smith Studying for the GRE really isn’t as hard as it seems at first. There are plenty of resources to help you, and the GRE even provides you with some excellent practice materials when you sign up to take the test. Study Books Several companies provide books that help you study for the GRE. Since the test is now online, most of these companies also provide practice tests that you can take on your computer. Often the best way to study is to simply take these tests, grade yourself, and study what you didn’t know. Take a Class Now first off, you should know that these classes are VERY expensive. Companies like Kaplan offer them for all the tests, but in reality, you probably don’t need a class to help you study for the GRE. If you decide to take one, though, inquire about the curriculum first to make sure that they aren’t just using the study materials you already have and walking you through them. Study Groups Oftentimes, your professors will be willing to put together a GRE study group as your success reflects on them and the school. Additionally, you may want to get together with a buddy or a group and study together. Having someone else remind you to keep studying can be the most powerful tool you have when getting ready to take the GRE. GRE CD When you sign up for the GRE, the company will send you a CD full of information and practice tests. The earlier you sign up, the earlier you will receive this valuable resource. When I was getting ready to take the GRE, I found that this was the most important tool I had, but since I didn’t sign up early, I only received it about a week before the test. Set Aside Time Make sure you set aside time each week for about a month or two to study for the GRE. If you spend 3 or 4 hours a week on the test for a month, you will probably make a good grade. By spacing out your studying, you’ll avoid having to cram for the last week in order to get through everything. It’s much more enjoyable to go have coffee one night a week with a friend and study together than it is to lock yourself in your room for a week to cram. Aromatherapy Oils and the Herpes Virus - A Personal Account

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

By Eric Cech Melissa Essential Oil and the Herpes Simplex Virus - A Personal Story The Herpes virus is a difficult little bug; a so-called ‘incurable’ infection with painful skin lesions. The sores come and go, more frequenly for some individuals than others, and often flollow stressful life conditions where the immune system may be weakened. Allopathic medicine doesn’t yet have a cure for this disease, only pills and creamse that must be used regularly to keep outbreaks from recurring and to lessen their duration. Incurable, painful, sort-of ugly, and with great names like ‘oral-labial’ or ‘genital’, this can be one challenging illness. This is a personal account - I had herpes outbreaks for several years, and had to deal with painful sores in my mouth and on my lips - sometimes so bad I thought my teeth were falling out! I’ve been through those internal struggles on how to break it to an intimate partner - thankfully their response was never as sever as I expected - hough it still seemed like a big deal to me. I regularly had those telling days of feeling a flu was about to hit, with several days of lesions to follow. What seemed the worst, being an athlete, was that training really hard tended to cause outbreaks almost for certain. I tried prescription medicines as well as some natural routes. Lysine, a singular amino acid, helped somewhat, but not all the time. I used significant amounts of lip balm, as sun overexposure also tended to cause outbreaks as well. I thought “I’ve got a lot of years left - will I always have to deal with this?” Then someone introduced me to essential oils, and I learned a little about their studied antiviral activity. I stumbled onto research performed with a certain oil known as Melissa. Melissa essential oil is distilled from Melissa herb, a plant with a long history in natural medicine. The plant yields a relatively small amount of oil compared to other aromatic varieties, so it’s cost seems a little high. But formal investigation has been being going on in Europe for many years applying the oil to herpes lesions, with very promising results. One company has even extracted a component of the oil and sold it in a prescription form (though I have not read of any evidence showing the extract works better than the oil itself). The most encouraging statement regarding the use of Melissa on herpes was made by Dr. Dietrich Wabner, a professor at the University of Munich: he stated that a single application of Melissa may lead to a complete remission of the disease. A possible cure! I’d figured I had nothing to lose, so I tried a little bottle of the oil. Searching further, I found a regimine for the oils’ use. Melissa might not lead to a complete remission in just one application - other healers were finding success when the oil was applied to the affected area when an outbreak felt ‘imminent’. The oil was applied perhaps three times per day during the outbreak; this was repeated the next several times the user thought an outbreak may be coming on, and through the duration of the skin healing. My outbreaks were usually on my tongue at that point (though they started on the palate of my mouth). I would get a very fatigued feeling for a few days, then my tongue would get what seemed like individual taste buds that would feel as though they were burnt (and yes, I have had medical confirmation as to their cause). I also had lesions on my lip, but not as often. So I began the Melissa oil program - just one drop in my mouth a few times a day - and thankfully I actually liked the taste! It turns out I wasn’t one of the few with a complete remission occuring with the first application - though I didn’t really expect it. The essential oil did help, however - the outbreaks were shorter and less intense. Then, after perhaps 5-7 times, the outbreaks stopped all together. And life has certainly been no less stressful or physical - perhaps even the opposite! But I’ve had no more oncoming flu symptoms or sores on my lips or in my mouth - even after heavy sun exposure. I can’t remember the last time I’ve had an outbreak now. For individuals who may have more sensitive skin than I, or have outbreaks in more sensitive places, Melissa essential oil can be diluted in a vegetable or nut oil (Hazelnut oil or Rosehipseed are commonly used) to 1/10th or even less of the total volume and be just as effective (some say that even 1% will work). It is important to note - and repeated many times in the literature - that taking any essential oil orally, or appliying undiluted to the skin, should be done with extreme caution - whatch your own reaction closely and proceed accordingly. I do not have experience with application to the genital variety of Herpes simplex, but the texts do not make a distinction - this may be where a carrier oil could come in handy. But whatever way it’s used, the system should be followed closely: apply Melissa 2-3 times a day to the affected area when an outbreak is on the way, and use it until the sores have healed completely. Follow this method for the next several outbreaks; there are no guarantees, but this may work for you or someone you may know - and what a wonderful thing it can be! For sufferer’s of Shingles, another Herpes virus variety causing lesions of the skin, Ravensara (Ravensara aromatica, or ‘True’ Ravensara) oil has been used. Individuals have found relief using Ravensara in a 50-50 blend with Tamanu Nut oil. The Tamanu Nut sooths the skin during the healing process and keeps the Ravensara in contact with the sores. I have not heard of this offering a complete cure, but I have heard of this blend really helping relieve discomfort of this condition. If you decide to try these natural methods, when buying essential oils, buy from a trusted source - Melissa oil particularly has been adulterated due to it’s high cost. The ‘fake’ mixture - a blend of Lemongrass and other essential oils oils - do not contain the same antiviral components. True Melissa is typically found in the range of $10 - $20 per milliliter, with organic varieties costing a little more. There are nearly twenty-five drops in one milliliter, and because only one drop is typically used for each application, a few milliliters (1/4 to 1/8th ounce) can go a long way. If you try this natural healing oil, or to recommend it to those in need, I wish the best of success! Boost Your Energy Levels

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

By Jonathon Hardcastle If you woke up last Tuesday feeling tired and are still feeling run down, do not think that this is the end of the world and that your energy levels have been exhausted completely or that your age is catching up with you . Everyone has at least once felt too tired to get up, dress, drive, work, and come back to the house ten hours later after performing a variety of functions, only to continue cleaning up, filing, cooking, and execute all those routine activities we have learned to complete on a daily basis. But although you tried to sleep your tiredness away, the feeling of fatigue has prevailed and you are now in a worse state than ever before. Do not panic, but instead seek a doctor’s advice and perform a medical check up. If all seem to be fine on the physical level, apart from the low energy levels you have been experiencing, then follow these tips and boost your energy to skyrocket heights. People that experience a low energy period usually comfort themselves by resorting to sleep and adding extra hours of bed time in their attempt to find their lost energy somewhere in-between their bed sheets and covers. This is usually not the right strategy. If you have maintained a steady sleeping schedule, prior to this recent development, which suited your needs perfectly, the extra sleep you are planning to have will not help you increase your energy levels and take control of your life again. On the contrary, if you decide to sleep when your body does not need that extra sleeping time you are increasing the feelings of being tired and lethargic. Thus, instead of sleeping, try to exercise. Energy needs energy to be produced. By performing simple exercises, like walking or swimming, your body will increase its metabolism which will help you get your energy levels again up. Try introducing exercising as part of your daily routine and you will be witnessing a tremendous change in your energy levels as well as mind awareness. Do not forget to consume fluids and particularly water. Additionally, by adding more vegetables, complex carbohydrates and proteins into your diet, you will see your energy increase and you will feel much better about yourself and be actually healthier than before. Another tactic to boost your energy levels is to start working on something you have been postponing for a long time, but would love to see yourself doing. Hobbies, interests, volunteer work or house improvement projects can help you get rid of boredom, which can be a very good reason why you feel the way you do. You can invest time in doing things that are fun and relax your body and mind. Going camping, fishing, playing with your or the neighbor’s kids, can assist you increase your recently dropped energy bucket and become involved again. Most importantly, you have to get started. If you begin doing something that can take you away from that couch or bed, you will witness the difference in your energy levels instantly. Do not procrastinate. Act today and boost your energy levels back up where they belong. Preserving the Past and Present for the Future

Monday, August 20th, 2007

By David Waterman Preserving your personal keepsakes, collectables and family history In most homes, we probably all have tucked away a huge assortment of items that we choose to keep for one reason or another. These items may be valuable or they may hold wonderful memories and are priceless family treasures. The list of things that we keep and collect is almost endless, such as photographs, family papers and letters, old newspapers, certificates, old passports, books, china and wedding dresses etc. Each item that you choose to keep and collect represents something unique and therefore deserves special treatment and care. Clearly, if you choose to keep theses items, you want them to last for years to come. People spent fortunes on collectables and yet they ignore the preservation of these items at their peril . A recent news story was released that detailed the extraordinary discovery of the Gospel of Judas. What was highlighted in this story was the fact that this codex had survived hidden for 1700 years and yet it was almost completely destroyed in the 20 years since its original discovery in the 1970s simply as a result of lack of care and thought. In order to ensure that the items that you keep are well preserved you need a very basic understanding of conservation principles. Careful storage and safe handling are the golden rules for ensuring the preservation of your family treasures, regardless of media type. What do you need to do to ensure that your most precious memories are always kept in pristine condition and how do you protect such a diverse range of items in a normal domestic environment? You need to be practical and understand the basic rules. Whilst you can control how family members treat your treasures, it is inevitable that over time, some wear and tear will occur which, in many instances, is perfectly acceptable and an important part of the item’s history and character. However, as temporary custodians, the objective is to extend the life of your collection so that future generations can enjoy it just as much as you and past generations have. These items often have great sentimental value and yet they have the similar preservation requirements as the items held by any archives or Museum. Similar to any professional conservators, you too should try to protect your personal collections from harmful external factors as best you can. The first signs of damage are discolouration, mould, smell or the items become brittle. If items are damaged you may need the assistance of a professional conservator. If you are in any doubt about the methods you are using to store items or you wish to get professional help with any conservation matters you should contact the Institute of Conservation. www.icon.org.uk. In order to help preserve the items that you wish to keep it is important to use good storage materials. These disciplines are used throughout the World to ensure that the most valuable national treasures are safely stored. You must use Archival (Acid Free) paper and boxes to wrap, cover and box the items that you wish to keep. This is something that all keen scrapbookers are now all familiar with. If an acidic product (That is ordinary cardboard box, plastic, newspaper or wood etc) comes into contact with paper, photos or textiles or other similar items, the acid can migrate, causing permanent damage and decay. This is why it is so important to use good quality Acid Free and Archival materials for the preservation of your treasured memories. Storage in archival products will slow the aging process and add years of life to the items you value. It is better to prevent damage and deterioration, than try to repair or correct it.Materials deteriorate as a result of the quality of the materials used and because of environmental and chemical changes that take place in the fibre of the materials over time and in changing environmental conditions. These materials are readily available now with papers and books for scrapbooking available from any good craft shop and safe archival boxes available from www.memories-nostalgia.com. It is useful to understand the issue of permanence and changing use of materials in the modern world. It is a fact of life that many of the modern materials that we come into contact with are not produced for long term survival, we are living in a disposable world and a cost driven world and often the quality of materials will suffer as a result. However it is important to keep originals and have them stored well. There is always a risk that fast changing technology will either degrade or due to technological obsolescence be unavailable for you to access in the future. (e.g. Cine film, 8 track) Consequently it is vital to preserve both the original records and the machines required to read them. A very good source of preservation information for the care of specific items is: http://www.conservationregister.com/caring.asp?id=4 National Preservation office also offers guidance www.bl.uk/services/npo/npo.html Library Of Congress provides a very comprehensive resource on preservation . http://www.loc.gov/preserv/careothr.html You can also contact you local council records office for advice from the conservation and archives office. Many council offices offer advice sheets online that are a very useful source of information. General Helpful hints Donts Dont store anything in direct sunlight or bright light, ideally store in the dark Don’t use self-adhesive photograph albums Don’t use newspaper to wrap documents or line boxes Don’t use ordinary envelopes, files, folders, tissue paper or standard cardboard boxes Dont use pens or felt tip markers on or near your artefacts Don’t use standard polythene or plastic bags, PVC, plastic envelopes and files. There are some plastics (polyester) which may be used, but you need to be certain what is safe Dont use frames that have poor quality mountboard or are backed with wood Never under any circumstance use any standard form of pressure sensitive tape or adhesive tape Never laminate a photo or document to preserve it. Also never use standard glue Dont use rubber bands, staples, pins or metal paper clips Dont store in areas of high humidity such as conservatories, near airing cupboards or places where condensation forms or near any heat sources Dont store anything in damp areas like cellars, attics, sheds or garages Dont store boxes against external walls, as these have high temperature fluctuations Avoid folding items and excessive handling, or ensure minimal folding Consider carefully the risks of storing items with a strong odour Do not overfill box as this will harm the contents and it will be unsafe to handle the weight Do not allow the box or its contents to get wet. Dos Try and store to as constant a temperature as possible, such as 13-18˚C and the relative humidity should not exceed 50% for a prolonged period. However, Please note that some collections may need more specific temperature and humidity guidelines and you may need to seek advice on this. Do use Acid Free tissue paper to interleave between pages of volumes with colour plates to prevent off-setting or blocking Keep originals in original and permanent formats When you are handling any precious items always ensure that your hands are clean and free of grease and dirt etc. Handle all items with great care. Handle photographic media gently and with great care to avoid finger marks on the images Try to ensure that you store your box in an area or room where air can circulate and ensure that you store your box in a pest and insect free area Ensure that the items that you store are clean or cleaned if necessary and remove any dust carefully before storing and keep box and contents as clean as possible. Always use archival quality materials (paper, adhesives, tape or embellishments) for your collection or for the decoration of your pages, box or collectables Glossary of terms: Archive Quality This is a term used to indicate that materials have undergone laboratory analysis to determine and confirm that their acidic and conservation properties are within safe levels. Ph Factor This refers to the acidity of a material. The ph scale is the standard for measurement of acidity and alkalinity .It runs from 1 to 14 with each number representing a ten-fold increase:Ph neutral is 7 and Acid free products have a ph factor of 7 or above. Find A Secured Loan

Monday, August 20th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Ian_Duncan]Ian Duncan Obtaining a Secured Loan is now even easier than before, the only dilemma you will have is choosing a lender. There are literally hundreds of lenders to choose from and you dont even have to go to your own bank, you can apply on-line and search through hundreds of lenders in seconds for a no-obligation decision on your loan, or approach a reputable Broker who will sort out all your paperwork, sometimes free of charge. Secured loans UK are available to those who own their own home, how it works is simple and straight forward, you can borrow anything from 5,000 to 100,000 possibly more depending on the individual lender and your home is used as collateral against the loan. In order for you to do this you will have to ensure there is either sufficient equity to borrow against, it is however possible for banks and financial institutions to approve Secured loans against properties that do not have sufficient equity, often this may be the case if you have just moved into a new property and have not made enough Mortgage payments. If you already have a Secured Loan against your property, in order for you to obtain another one, the first one will be redeemed from any future advances. Secured Loans are ideal for releasing cash in a hurry, whether you require the money for a business venture, new car, wedding, holiday or home improvements or you may wish to use the money purely to consolidate any existing debts, so that you will be left with one affordable monthly payment, some lenders will even allow you a six-month payment break when money is tight. Those with adverse credit such as CCJS (county court judgements) defaults, mortgage arrears and even secured loan arrears can apply for a Secured Loan. The majority of lenders do not credit score and have individual plans that allow for some adverse credit. You can even be accepted if you are self employed with no proof of income or accounts, the interest rate will undoubtedly be higher for these cases, however if you are willing to shop around, you can find an interest rate and repayment method that will suit your circumstances. Bad Credit Loans - Much Needed Money in the Most Testing Times

Thursday, August 16th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=James_Taylor]James Taylor For people who do not know much about bad credit, it will often be incomprehensible as to why a financial product has been devoted solely to cater to the class. Nonetheless, the proportions that bad credit people constitute of the population, justifies the creation of a separate loan category. It is however, contestable if bad credit loans have done enough justice to its customers. The principal contention of the borrowers is the excessively high rate of interest that they have to shell out for bad credit loans. When compared with the terms offered to the regular customers, the terms on which bad credit loans come indeed look inflated. However, this is an erroneous perspective that things are being looked through. Regular customers are those who have perfect to good credit history. If past credit reports depict the credibility enjoyed by a borrower, then a person who has a good credit history will be relatively safer to lend. Thus, terms on which loans are offered to borrowers are fairly lenient than for the bad credit borrowers. This does not discount instances when loan providers would intentionally peg the rate of interest higher. Sensing the urgency of the individual, many loan providers would fix the interest rates higher. Individuals, who have been refused loans from several lenders, will seldom believe that there are many deals available in href =http://www.chanceforloans.co.uk/bad_credit_car_loan.html]bad credit loans. Had it not been for online lending, borrowers would have continued believing the same, and falling prey to the swindling tactics employed by certain loan providers. Online lenders are not limited to a single county or region. Most of the loan providers have a nationwide presence, serving customers through their own branches or through a network of lenders having base in the specific county. This ensures that the purview of search is widened. The loan providers undertake to find the loan deals that suit the requirements of the borrowers. Though not impossible, it will be difficult for the borrowers to search individually for the desired bad credit loans. Refusal by a few loan providers is enough to undermine their fervour. Online loan providers however utilise a different method of searching bad credit loan deals for its borrowers. When an application is received for a bad credit loan, the borrower will have to be responded within a short period (generally an hour) if he can qualify for the loan. Known as an in-principle decision, this is not a final approval of the loan. This is an intimation from the lender that, provided certain conditions are fulfilled, the borrower will be sanctioned the bad credit loan. The loan providers after making a study of the case statistics of the borrower and determining the credibility that he enjoys, would match the borrowers requirements with the loan deals available. Even when lenders from the network are to be utilised, borrowers stand a chance of getting the best deals. The same lenders who would have feared offering loans to the bad credit customer, would easily lend when applications are routed through an online lender. This is because the online lenders guarantee as to the trustworthiness of the individual after conducting the relevant checks. The amount that is actually sanctioned as a bad credit loan will be lesser than what is desired. This again depends on the lending policies prevalent among the loan providers of a particular region. There are certain lenders who do not consider bad credit people posing too much of a risk. Certain techniques will be utilised to cover the risk posed. Demanding a collateral of the borrower is one such technique. A bad credit loan where the borrower has to present the lien to an asset is termed as secured bad credit loans. House is the most commonly used collateral. House also secures the largest amount for the borrowers. The other important assets used include automobiles, stocks and shares etc. The common practice is to hold the lien over the asset till the secured bad credit loan has been repaid in full. Homeowners who have pledged the home equity to serve as collateral will not have to move house. However, when the loan has been left unpaid, the borrower has the rights to repossess the home for recovering the due amount. It is the fear of the home being repossessed that many borrower would look forward to unsecured loans. The relatively higher rates of interest and stricter terms are set aside to ensure that home is not endangered. Bad credit loans facilitate a significant change in the credit history of the borrowers. The manner in which the decisions on the bad credit loan are made, and the discipline with which the decisions are implemented and adhered to has much bearing on whether or not a borrower is able to improve his credit ratings. How to Get Employers to Call You for a Job Interview?

Wednesday, August 15th, 2007

By Maurice Turmel According to a number of surveys, poorly executed resums are stifling the career opportunities of many employment seekers. One survey of 200 Florida students and assorted job seekers found that 90% didnt think their resums represented them as well as they could. One major employer in the area suggested that 85% of the resumes they viewed did not measure up to their quality standards for an interview. These types of statistics are repeated all over North America. Here are Five Helpful Hints for Creating a Winning Resum. 1. Always have a job objective. The first line of your resum should state the position you are seeking. Your objective shows an employer that you are focused in your career goals and know exactly what you want. 2. Use powerful action words. One of the most effective ways to impress an employer is by describing the work youve done with strong action words. For example, instead of saying you were responsible for a department (passive), say you managed that department (active). Some of the strongest words to use on a resum are: managed, developed, authored, negotiated and conceptualized. 3. Use bullets generously. This is how you catch an employers eye instantly. When you use bullets to highlight your qualifications, achievements and capabilities, you force him/her to read them. Bullets also break up bodies of text, creating more white space and making your resum more visually appealing. 4. Be focused and selective. Apply for only one job at a time in your area of interest and make sure your resum includes all the information that supports your job objective. Shot-gunning (sending out multiple rsums to multiple employers) wastes your time and theirs. 5. Call an expert. When you dont have the inclination or time to write your own resum, call a professional. What they can see in your experience and education will typically be broader than your subjective perceptions, and will more accurately represent your total profile than your limited view. This can translate into a Powerful, Winning Resum for you. Maurice Turmel PhD has an established background in Resume Preparation, Cover Letter writing and Interview Coaching.
